Indie Minded Interview: Meresha

September 22, 2014

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with South Florida based (Warsaw born) singer, Meresha. Through this interview, we hope you learn a bit more about Meresha, as we did!

Indie Minded: You’re really young. How old are you and when did you realize that you were going to pursue music as a career?

Meresha: I saw the Black Eyed Peas in Warsaw some years ago. Not long after I saw Paramore at Jones Beach near New York. Both were amazing. I was hooked and knew this is what I had to do. I’m still a teen, but have been at it about 6 years.

IM: Was there an exact moment that you can recall when you knew this was it?

M: It was a few years later after I had already been working on my music. I sang Queen’s Somebody to Love in Warsaw’s largest musical theater with probably 50 dancers behind me and maybe a thousand people in the audience. The thrill of performing with other artists and interacting with the audience was something I had to have more of.

IM: You have a mature sound both musically and vocally. What do you attribute that to?

M: I’ve alway been into great music and hopefully some of that rubs off. Queen, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and others are in my vinyl and CD collection. I’ve had some great coaches who helped me develop my voice without hurting myself. I was lucky to train a few times with the Ron Anderson who worked with a huge range of folks from Hayley Williams and Alicia Keys to Tom Cruise and Adam Levine on their singing.

IM: Your performance of Alicia Keys “Fallin” is great and really puts your raw talent on display. How do you choose which songs to cover and are there any in particular that you’d like to cover in the future?

M: I try to cover challenging songs I like. Lately I’ve been digging through electronic artists I might cover. I recently covered Latch (Sam Smith with Disclosure).

IM: You’ve played as part of a band and now as a solo artist. Which do you prefer and why?

M: Playing in a band is great, but so far I have created my own music myself. Performing it live, though, is a challenge as there are sometimes more than a dozens instruments on the songs. A full live band creates a really dynamic and exciting sound and usually adds some unexpected twists.

IM: What are the challenges that you face as a young indie artist and do you see benefits to remaining independent?

M: You can do a lot of things as an independent – write, record, distribute, promote online, etc. The key challenge is getting noticed among the thousands of talented musicians, and then staying on the radar. The Majors make access to some things easier, like TV (e.g., playing the Tonight Show) and major publications. It seems the differences between being indie and signed are getting smaller, though. If you can afford them, experts are available for PR, lining up gigs, etc. The key questions now when working with Majors is what they can offer, how much focus they’ll give you and what you have to give away in return. Don’t sign your whole career away!

IM: Let’s talk about your new work. Your latest single is called Vida and you also released Acid Bass recently. What is your creative process like and how would you describe your style and influences?

M: Some of my songs start as a lyric and some as a melody on a keyboard. Once the songs have some shape, I add the other instruments one-by-one in my home “studio”. Vida and Acid Bass are both electronic-based dance songs. My tastes are for eccentric songs in many genres. I expect you’ll hear a range of electronic, rock, pop, r&b, rap, etc. over time. Right now, I’m a big fan of artists like Disclosure, Aphex Twin, Flying Lotus and James Blake. There’s a lot to learn from legends like Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant too.

IM: If you could collaborate with any one musician or songwriter living or dead, who would it be and why?

M: Would be amazing to have Freddie and Hayley Williams (of Paramore) on the stage at the same time with me. Theater, energy and me… Would you come?

IM: What are you working on for the rest of the year? I read that you may release an EP. Is that still the plan?

M: I am working on several new songs. Hopefully I’ll have them ready in the next few months and will release them as an EP, probably in physical as well as digital versions.

IM: You previously ran a successful Kickstarter campaign. Would you consider another one?

M: The Kickstarter campaign was great. It was amazing to have support from literally around the world. I’d be happy to do another Kickstarter campaign, but probably in some time. I’m not sure fans want to be asked directly for support too often.

IM: Looking to next year, tell us what we can look forward to seeing from you in 2015.

M: I’ve been working song by song lately and probably will continue that. Every month or two, I would expect to put out either one of my own songs or a cool cover. I do expect to perform live in the US (and maybe a bit in Europe) in 2015.

IM: We like to end with this–if we looked at your iPod, what would we find as your guilty pleasure or some artist you might be embarrassed to admit you listen to?

M: Did you see my Miley Cyrus poster?

"NEW Q&A: South Floridian Meresha Is Getting Ready To Take Over The World. Read What Makes Her Tick"

Meresha Q&A

Your name:

Meresha.

Where are you from?

I’m from South Florida, but was born in Warsaw.

How would you describe yourselves?

Musician/alien/vegan | Soon to take over da world :-)

I'm mainly a vocalist, but I do play guitar, piano and drums. I usually write all the words and music on my songs, as well as play all the sounds.

Who are your main influences musically?

About six years ago I got into Paramore and their lead singer Hayley Williams. I travelled almost 20,000 miles to go to their concerts in Chicago, Long Island, Warsaw, Atlantic City and Baltimore. I was hooked. Last week I met the band in person before their show in West Palm Beach. I cried. You can see my video about the meeting on my YouTube page.

Right now I also really like Disclosure, Aphex Twin, Flying Lotus and James Blake.

From the classics I love Freddie Mercury of Queen, Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. You can see my live Led Zeppelin covers on my YouTube.

I like eccentric songs of many genres – alternative, electronic, rock, pop, R&B, rap.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

I’m going step by step. I want to build a sustainable life as a musician. Right now I'm releasing song by song. I'll probably put out an EP later this year.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Probably my debut concert at B.B. King’s at the end of last year. People who supported my crowdfunded EP “Lunatic” were there to hear the songs live for the first time.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

There were a time the gear wasn’t set up right and a live performance was not good. Lesson learned.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

“Acid Bass” is my current favorite. It's a dance number and uses some original synth equipment. Hope you like it!

Where can we listen to it?

Elements of alternative, electronic, rock, pop, R&B and rap permeate the sound of the US-based musician known simply as Meresha

Meresha - Acid Bass

Written by Maggie Sapet (VIC)

Elements of alternative, electronic, rock, pop, R&B and rap permeate the sound of the US-based musician known simply as Meresha. Describing music as “…my way of taking over the world”, Meresha was first inspired to pursue her own musical dreams some years ago when she got massively into Paramore. This saw her attend no less than six shows including the front of the mosh pit at the House of Blues. Meresha wasn’t only hooked on Paramore it seems, but the industry as a whole. Music is also a place for Meresha to put in all of her creativity and energy that she seems to possess. Like most, she also finds music the best escape and loves discovering new sounds.

Meresha’s current influences include Disclosure, FKA Twigs, Aphex Twin, Flying Lotus and James Blake. These sit alongside the classics such as Freddie Mercury, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. Of Zeppelin in particular, Meresha has several covers for your viewing pleasure on her YouTube channel.  These influences and the aforementioned genres that permeate her music can be heard in her catchy track called Acid Bass that is in response to Meresha’s love of some great original electronic music that she has heard around the traps.

Of the track, Meresha says “Acid Bass is a celebration of this music and a new revolution”. It is a nod to the past; the song was played on some of the original electronic instruments like Moog synths. In fact, Meresha is still looking for a huge modular synthesiser to use in the background for a future video. Including Acid Bass and others yet to be heard, Meresha takes song writing inspiration from a range of places – daily experiences, other music, art and simply things she witnesses on the street. The songs themselves start in different places differentiating from a particular instrument to the lyrics. Meresha has in fact written down many ideas over the years that may one day fashion themselves into fully-fledged songs.

Meresha is actually pretty unique in her own way of course. She is mainly a vocalist, but she’s also accomplished on the guitar, piano and drums. She also writes the lyrics and music and plays all the sounds. She is the very definition of an independent artist. People were able to witness this last year when Meresha was able to play to the people who supported her crowd-funded EP called Lunatic. She is taking things one step at a time with her career with a view to one day being able to build a sustainable life as a musician. If that all goes to plan; Meresha hopes to play gigs internationally and connect with fans in many places.  She is releasing song by song for the time being with Vida being the latest release via Soundcloud. There will also eventually be an accompanying video to the track. There might also be another EP release before the year is out that will then see Meresha hit the live circuit once more.

Have a listen to Acid Bass below!

"If you expect someone to hand you superstardom on a platter, dream on. If you want to build a sustainable life as an artist, and have a bit of talent, it can be done. No one will say it is easy, but then what is?"

6 Reasons Why Now is the Best Time for Musicians

A Guest Post by Meresha

Today is probably the best and most exciting time to be a musician.

There’s a lot of negativity these days about the music industry. Music revenue is down, CD sales are disappearing, people are streaming instead of buying music, etc.

Compared to the past, though, there are at least 6 reasons why these times are better than any other in history for musicians.

1. Fans can find you

With Soundcloud, Spotify, YouTube and other online sites, there are many channels for new fans to find your music. It used to be that almost the only way to be heard was for a record company to sign you and promote your song over the radio.

2. You can communicate with Fans

With the continuing boom in social media, you have unfiltered access to most music buyers in the world. You can find folks in the smallest niches and communicate with them directly. In the past, independent artists didn’t have much access to what was a very limited number of media outlets.

3. You can be the record company

You can decide what music to put out when. If you want to bring back the Acid Bass, as I try to do on a recent song, you can. No longer are to subject to the filter of label executives trying to force you to be the next Ariana Grande or Beyoncé.

4. You can record with world class sound

With a software program, a computer and some limited equipment, you can record world-class music including the most sophisticated compositions. Yourself. In your bathroom. Gone are the days when you always had to have a huge budget for studio time, producers, engineers, managers, etc.

5. You can distribute internationally quickly

There are a range of distributors of music such as Tunecore, which I use, CD Baby and others that will get your music to iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and dozens of other of digital stores within days. Now you don’t have to produce physical products, ship them internationally and worry about returns.

6. You control your destiny

The days when someone like Clive Davis would discover and develop you are gone. Almost all artists today can, and have to, control their own destiny. Even the most famous ones. It means connecting with fans on social media, at concerts, through regular email and a few thousand other things. While challenging, it can be done.

If you expect someone to hand you superstardom on a platter, dream on.

If you want to build a sustainable life as an artist, and have a bit of talent, it can be done. No one will say it is easy, but then what is?

Rock on!

What do you think?

Let me know. You can follow my own musical adventure at Meresha.com

"A few weeks ago I interviewed a relatively new artist from Florida. ... Then she blew my mind."

HOW TO BE SMARTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE

A few weeks ago I interviewed a relatively new artist from Florida.  Her name is Meresha and her catchy single, “Fool Don’t Be” caught my attention.  She requested the MP3 of the interview and I sent it to her.  Then she blew my mind.

Within a week, she sent a return email that included a link to the video below. She turned a simple interview into a public relations tool AND made a huge impression on both New Driven and JammerDirect.com.

Think outside the box. Think beyond yourself. Win the fight.

Click the image below for the video and make sure to catch what she does at the end!
