"Meresha is Ready to take the music scene solo ... be ready" (interview)

Meresha is the 18 year old Electro-Pop Artist from Warsaw in Poland who was in Group in the UK and USA and now is ready to take the music scene solo...Be ready.

How old are you?
18

What is your genre of music?
You can call it electro-pop. My current EP is mainly built around electronic sounds.

Give us a little Bio of you.
Alien-loving vegan singer, songwriter, musician, composer and producer.

Someone said “a musical baby of Joss Stone and Björk”.

European born and influenced, I moved to the US 3 years ago and recently released “New Revolution”, after a previous Kickstarter supported release (thanks to supporters!).

I wrote and sung every song on my album, and as a pianist, guitarist and drummer, have composed and performed each song as well.

I was also the first artist to launch an EP exclusively on the innovative new social media site tsu, one week before the music was available publicly. My new video for “New Revolution” premiered there.

How long have you been doing music?
Starting my 7th year. Recorded my first song “Fool Don’t Be” when I was 12. You can find a reworked version online.

What made you go into music?
I went to a few Paramore concerts and experienced Hayley Williams and the Band live. It was eye opening. Then I saw Black-Eyed Peas in Warsaw. After that I knew what I wanted to do.

Are you a signed Artist?
No, not to a big label. It is not a big focus for me.

What instruments do you play?
My main instrument is Voice, but I also play keys, guitar and drums. All the music on my EP is by me.

Who are your influences?
I like a wide range of eclectic music from various genres. For example, on Spotify, I’m subscribed to Bob Marley, a Jazz playlist, the complete Year & Years together with the complete James Blake and Paramore. Some years ago I was in Led Zep tribute band. Really good music inspires.

When will your new material be out?
I just put out the Radio Mix of “New Revolution” which I recently reworked. I’m also running a remix competition on Indaba Music and plan to release 3 of them. Over 150 producers have submitted mixes, so it will be a hard choice, especially as the approaches taken are so incredibly diverse and creative.

How do you get inspiration to write songs?
From a wide variety of sources. Sometimes it from the various music I’ve heard. Sometimes it’s from my travels or personal experiences. I’m also very inspired by nature and art, having sketched myself quite a bit earlier.

What is your best song you’ve written?
One of my favorite songs on the album is “you”. It’s the story of two individuals who like each other but don’t know how the other feels. It was my first love song.

Where do you see yourself in 2-5 Years?
Hopefully by that time I’ll have a body of material that I have created that will allow me to play headline shows and surprise fans with song choices.

If you weren’t doing music what would you be doing?
Well, I originally wanted to be an Astronaut and travel to a few planets. Not sure my physics and math skills will allow me to qualify, but one can dream.

When your not doing music, what do you do?
I like to go to shows when I can. I’ve seen FKA Twigs, James Blake, MGMT, Paramore, Fall Out Boy and others recently. Otherwise, you can find me outside – running, blading, and enjoying the outdoors.

If you could collaborate with one UK Artist or band who would it be?
Do you have the number for James Blake?

If you could collaborate with one USA Artist or band who would it be?
Maybe Macklemore, partially because he is crazy creative, and partially because he is doing what I want to do. Have success as an Indie.

Where is your dream venue or festival to perform in UK?
How about 3 sold out shows in Wembley? Seriously, I would love to play clubs in the UK. I’m a big fan of London and need to see the rest of the country.

Where is your dream venue or festival to perform in USA?
I’m going to look at some closely next summer. Obviously the big ones like Lollapalooza in Chicago, CMJ or SXSW would be cool.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given?
Have fun.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Figure out what your voice is. Keep working until you do. If you don’t like your stuff and what you are doing, why should anyone else. Be true to yourself first.

What quote or saying do you always stick by?
“You don’t need anybody to tell you who you are or what you are. You are what you are!” – John Lennon

When you are at a gig, what are 5 things you can not forget?

Nr. 1 – the gig is for the fans, not for you. Try to make it memorable.

Nr. 2 – Have fun. If you don’t, others won’t.

Nr. 3 – Be prepared. You only can be effortless, if you put in the effort first.

Nr. 4 – Be creative. Take songs to new, unexpected places to mix it up.

Nr. 5 – If you have a band, encourage them to adopt 1-4.

Do you have social media accounts so your fans can follow you?
I’m on most major sites. You can first all the links here: http://www.meresha.com/social
I’m “Mereshas” on Youtube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. “Meresha” on Soundcloud and tsu (tsu.co/Meresha).
